Required Biosafety Training

The IBC requires annual training for faculty, staff, and students that work in laboratories containing infectious agents and rDNA. Training records should accompany BUA submissions for all laboratory personnel listed on the BUA.  The PI is responsible for maintaining training records of all laboratory personnel in the primary laboratory approved for use in the BUA.  Questions may be referred to the Biological Safety Officer

Training requirements may be satisfied by:

1.   Completing online training modules provided by Risk Management and Safety
(RMS) which are available (Contact the Biological Safety Officer for more information.)

2.   Attending a RMS training session, or

  • RMS provides seminar based training to groups across campus. These sessions satisfy training requirements and can be scheduled by contacting the Biosafety Officer.

3.   Participating in a PI conducted training session.

  • PI conducted training must cover generalized training for the biosafety level at which the laboratory operates and specialized training for specific hazards present in the lab. Specific training may include, but is not limited to: 1) safe handling and disposal of biohazardous materials, 2) the necessary precautions to prevent exposures, 3) exposure evaluation procedures, and 4) handling of sharps and medical waste. Please reference the Biological Safety Manual or contact the Biosafety Officer with questions regarding appropriate training content.
