Dr. John Liu was appointed Associate Provost & Associate Vice President for Research at Auburn University on December 1, 2013. In this position, he provides leadership for research operations in the academy and serves as the liaison between the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Provost Office, and the University’s colleges/schools and other units. Dr. Liu joined Auburn faculty in 1995, and became Alumni Professor in 2003. Prior to his current position, Dr. Liu served as Associate Dean for Research in the College of Agriculture and Assistant Director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station for six years. Dr. Liu played various leadership roles at the national level including serving as the Aquaculture Coordinator for the USDA National Animal Genome Project NRSP-8, a member of the Science and Technology Committee for APLU. He has served on numerous scientific advisory panels and as an academic editor for Marine Biotechnology, BMC Genomics, and several other journals.
Dr. Liu received his B.S. in 1981 in Plant Pathology and Entomology from Northwest Agricultural University in China, M.S. in 1985 in Plant Pathology from the University of Minnesota, and Ph.D. in 1989 in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Minnesota. He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Minnesota Medical School. His research has focused on aquaculture genomics and informatics as well as biotechnology. He has trained over 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and published three books and over 220 papers.
