On Saturday, March 23, the Auburn University College of Nursing partnered with several organizations in the Auburn-Opelika area to host a Hispanic Health Fair. Auburn University College of Nursing students enrolled in the Growth and Development class, taught by Dr. Ann Lambert and Dr. Amy Curtis, provided education on infant safe sleep practices and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) prevention. Resources in both English and Spanish were provided to families, including a children’s picture book and several informational pamphlets. Two interactive models were displayed in different cribs, showing proper sleep practices. At the end of the day, one family was the lucky raffle winner of a full-sized crib and mattress.
One of the defining factors of this fair was its demonstration of the importance of collaboration in the healthcare field. At the Equal Access Auburn tent, Auburn University nursing and pharmacy students facilitated screenings for blood pressure and blood glucose levels. Additional booths at the fair included Auburn University dietetics, counseling, and pharmacy students. Besides providing health care and health promotion, the Hispanic Health Fair brought the community together with fun activities for the whole family, including a cookout, bouncy castles and face painting.
