Christen Berry Skinner, of Slocomb, Ala. will represent the Auburn University School of Nursing as student marshal at the December 11 commencement at Jordan-Hare Stadium, where she will receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

Student marshals are selected by an awards committee from each college. They have distinguished themselves by service to their school or college. To be considered, students must have completed a minimum of four semesters at Auburn University with a scholastic average of 3.40 (graduating Cum Laude) or higher and possess qualities of leadership, citizenship, character, and promise of professional ability.

A faculty member who nominated Skinner for this honor felt that “throughout the past three semesters, Christen had consistently demonstrated the epitome of a remarkable nursing student and been a leader among her colleagues. She was engaged in her studies, excelled academically, and was well respected by all those she associated with. We are proud of Christen and proud of her many accomplishments."

A 2016 honors graduate of Slocomb High School, Skinner graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Wallace Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program (Dothan, Ala.) in 2019, and has practiced as a registered nurse for two years. At Auburn, Skinner completed multiple research- and evidence-based projects recognized by the university’s School of Nursing and implemented within healthcare facilities in the Wiregrass. She has been nominated to Auburn’s Golden Key honor society and the National Society of Leadership and Success. She is currently an operating room nurse at Southeast Health in Dothan.

“I chose the RN-BSN program to further my nursing education and to open doors for career and academic advancement in years to come,” Skinner said. “I enjoyed Auburn’s home-like atmosphere portrayed even through a distance program. The RN-BSN instructors and advisors truly care about each students’ education and work tirelessly to help us succeed. They truly go above and beyond to make this the best RN-BSN program.”

“I want to provide compassionate care to patients while educating future and practicing nurses to ensure safe and professional care across the field of health care. The field of nursing is a special calling, and I believe it is my duty to be a servant of God by improving the health and well-being of every life I touch.”

Skinner would like to become a nurse practitioner and nurse educator after obtaining a master’s in nursing and a doctoral degree in nursing practice at Auburn.

Christen Skinner is the daughter of Dennis Berry and Mary Cosma of Slocomb, Ala. She is newly married to Brandon Skinner of Hartford, Ala.
