Jared Steltenpohl joined AUCON in 2021 and has demonstrated the capabilities necessary to support the College of Nursing’s operations, and what it takes to keep the college operating smoothly! He collaborates with Leora Wright, another IT professional who works in the CON’s Simulation lab, and key team members at the Office of Information Technology (OIT).
Working for the College of Nursing, according to Steltenpohl, presented an opportunity to be part of Auburn University while continuing his long-standing collaboration with healthcare professionals, a field he has been engaged with since 2012.
Steltenpohl possesses a diverse skill set, with over a decade of experience in IT, healthcare technology, automotive technology, car audio/video installation, and as a nationally certified pharmacy technician. “I have undertaken various roles over the years, including being a breakfast chef and even working part-time as a fossor,” he mentioned.
As the resident IT Specialist, his primary responsibility is to ensure all technology functions effectively for faculty and staff, handling hardware installations, providing guidance on technology equipment, software, and latest tech advancements. He serves as the initial point of contact for any technical issues, from basic troubleshooting to cyber forensics and simulation mannequin maintenance. “While I find the mannequins somewhat unsettling, it is essential for the greater good,” he commented. He acknowledged Wright’s crucial role in teaching him the intricacies of AUCON IT and how to best serve the community.
Steltenpohl has assisted the college in adapting to significant growth, managing the IT needs of a workforce that has nearly doubled. “My role has become increasingly automated to streamline IT processes for an expanding workforce, which has grown from 40 to 70 employees, ensuring all technological requirements are met,” he added.
He is also a committed mentor in the TigerCheckTM outreach program, where he works directly with nursing students. “The program allows me to apply my IT expertise and engage with nursing students. I seize any opportunity to impart knowledge and instill a positive mindset in younger generations,” he stated.
What do you enjoy most about working at AUCON?
"The people," is the cliché yet accurate response! For Steltenpohl, the interaction with students is particularly rewarding, despite having limited direct contact. His involvement in the TigerCheckTM outreach program exemplifies his dedication. "AUCON graduates exceptional nurses, evidenced by a 100% NCLEX pass rate," he noted.
How do you balance work and personal life?
Steltenpohl acknowledges the challenges of being on call 24/7 but highlights the efficiency of their internal ticket system, which allows colleagues to submit requests and prioritize their urgency effectively.
