On Nov. 29, 2022, 27 feet of hair was donated at Auburn University’s College of Nursing for Tiger Trims! The heart behind Tiger Trims is to increase awareness of alopecia or hair loss and provide an outreach opportunity for our students to engage with the local community.

It was an event filled with excitement, smiles, and a few nerves as some students donated almost a foot of hair! Nearly 35 donors from the Auburn community were represented at this outreach event. Hair donations came from elementary school children, current nursing students, members of the Auburn community and faculty members, ranging in age from 4 to 50 years. And Aubie joined in on the fun!

AUCON is grateful to the hair stylists who donated their time and expertise. A special ‘thank you’ to Amy Vaughn from The Montgomery Collective, Amanda Wilkes of Diversity Salon, Heather Baker and Audi Serrano from Tiger Lily Salon and Stephanie Bailey and Jessica Royle from Euphoria Salon. We could not have done it without these professionals who donated their time for a great cause.

Hair loss in children is generally related to several common conditions including tinea capitis, alopecia areata, and trichotillomania. Another group of patients is those who have hair loss related to chemotherapy and/or radiation or burn trauma. These changes can lead to low self-esteem, depression, bullying, and social isolation. Managing alopecia requires caring for the child and family. Providing support and reassurance for these patients and their families is crucial. Children with extensive hair loss may feel more comfortable with a wig. Donated ponytails will be shipped to a company that prepares prosthetic wigs free of charge for patients.

AUCON thanks everyone that helped make this drive a success!
