The Auburn University School of Nursing, established in 1979, recognized the fortieth graduating class of 2020 during commencement exercises on Aug. 7. The ceremony, in keeping with the current pandemic situation, was held virtually. Nearly 100 students graduated this year, with 70 of them initiated into Sigma, the International Honor Society of Nursing, and 4 as Phi Kappa Phi, Senior Scholarship Honor Society.
Dean Gregg Newschwander welcomed the new graduates. The following students received awards for outstanding performance in various categories:
President’s Award recipient was presented to Sophie Brint by Dean Newschwander.
Dean Newschwander presented the Dean’s Award to Alex Hightaian.
AUSON Most Supportive Student was presented by Professor Tiffani Chidume to Sophie Brint.
SGA Outstanding Student Award was presented to Haley Hall by Dean Newschwander.
AUSON Outstanding Contribution to the School of Nursing Award was presented to Haley Hall by Professor Kendall Henderson.
AUSON Faculty Award was presented to Anna Herndon by Professor Kendall Henderson.
Robert & Marjorie Goodson "Nurse of Nurses" Award was presented to Joseph Gillis by Professor Erica Kierce.
Robert & Marjorie Goodson Perseverance Award was presented to Hali Thomas by Professor Andrea Smith.
The Nightingale Pledge was led by Sophie Brint.
Professor Valarie Thomas addressed the graduates, and the names of graduates were announced by Pam Hennessey, academic advisor.
Professor Francine Parker was the recipient of the Dr. Jemelene Chastain Moore Distinguished Faculty Award.
The Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Dr. Terri Allison (’85), associate professor of nursing and assistant dean for academics, doctoral nursing practice at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.
