Demi Dees, a native of Franklin, Ala., and a second-semester student at Auburn University’s College of Nursing (AUCON), demonstrated remarkable skill and instinct when an emergency arose recently. Her decisive actions while training at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center highlighted the strength of Auburn's nursing program and her own commitment to patient care.

During a clinical shift on the Dedicated Education Unit, Dees sensed something was wrong with a patient and quickly alerted the primary RN. Her swift response prompted the RN to activate the rapid response team. Acting just in time, the RN performed the Heimlich maneuver, ultimately clearing the patient’s obstructed airway and averting a life-threatening crisis.

“It is my absolute privilege to recognize Demi Dees, one of our Dedicated Education Unit students, for her swift and lifesaving action in a moment of true need,” said Whitnie Willis, assistant clinical professor at AUCON. “Her actions were crucial in preventing a serious outcome, and the patient, clinical team, hospital leadership, and I are incredibly grateful. We are very proud of what she accomplished and know she will excel as a nurse.”

Reflecting on the experience, Demi shared, “I trusted my gut instinct when something didn’t seem right. I also learned that it’s important to be vocal during emergencies.”

Demi’s commitment and quick thinking underscore the dedication to excellence that Auburn instills in its students. Her story exemplifies the compassion, vigilance, and readiness AUCON strives to develop in each student, preparing them to make a difference wherever they go.

AUCON celebrates Demi’s actions and is proud to see its students embodying the values of skill and empathy that are central to the field of nursing.
