This fall marks the exciting launch of the Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) program, a collaborative initiative between the Auburn University College of Nursing (AUCON) and the Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center. The program, coordinated by AUCON’s Assistant Clinical Professor Whitnie Willis, welcomes eight enthusiastic nursing students into this innovative clinical education experience, designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Willis is a joint appointment faculty member for the Academic Practice Partnership between AUCON and Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center. (The Academic-Practice Partnership is between a nursing program and a care setting and is an important mechanism to strengthen nursing practice and help nurses become well positioned to lead change and advance health of the public.)

The DEU model, developed by the Wellstar Health System, offers a fresh approach to nursing education. Unlike traditional clinical rotations, where students might spend limited time in a clinical setting, the DEU program immerses students in a full 12-hour shift. This experience allows students to work closely with dedicated clinical teachers and staff nurses who serve as mentors and role models. The collaborative environment is designed to deepen students’ understanding of the nursing process, enhance critical thinking skills, and emphasize evidence-based practice.

For the eight AUCON students participating this semester, the DEU presents a unique opportunity to build confidence and competence through hands-on experience. Under the guidance of experienced clinical team members at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, these students will gain invaluable insights into direct patient care, interprofessional collaboration, and the application of their classroom knowledge in real-world clinical situations. The continuous feedback and individualized instruction available in the program ensure that each student’s learning needs are addressed, nurturing their growth as future nursing professionals.

The model also benefits the clinical team. By engaging in the education of future nurses, clinical staff will enhance their own practice through teaching and reflection. This collaboration not only reinforces evidence-based care standards but also fosters a culture of continuous learning and professional development, which can lead to greater job satisfaction and teamwork. The model also supports the seamless integration of new graduates into the clinical setting, potentially aiding in the recruitment and retention of nursing staff.

As AUCON and Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center embark on this new semester with the DEU program, it is setting the stage for a collaborative future in nursing education. It not only prepares students for the realities of clinical practice, but strengthens the entire healthcare team, ensuring high-quality, compassionate care for patients.

Willis extends her heartfelt gratitude to all the clinical teachers, staff nurses, and team members at the Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center for their commitment to shaping the future of nursing. Here’s to a successful and rewarding semester ahead!
