The College of Nursing has nominated an exceptional student to lead the processional during summer commencement. It is one of the highest honors the university awards to students based on their academic performance and their involvement in and contribution to the campus community. Allison Parker was recognized for completing a stellar undergraduate career at Auburn University — succeeding inside the classroom and out, on campus and far beyond.

It’s amazing how a childhood moment of excitement turned into a lifelong passion. As a 12-year old visiting her extended family in Birmingham, Allison Parker remembers the moment she announced that she would become a nurse, despite initial doubt from others.

“We were driving past Children’s and UAB Hospitals when I decided that I would become a nurse. At the time, I had no plans to pursue a nursing or medical career, but that moment grew into a strong passion for nursing.”

According to Parker, Auburn University's support was a crucial part of her success and how well everything fell into place once she started nursing school. Her interest in both the human and scientific aspects of nursing highlights her commitment to providing compassionate and effective care.

“The program has given me a deep appreciation for the profound responsibility that comes with being a nurse,” Parker said. “I’ve learned that it’s not just about applying clinical skills, but also about connecting with patients on a human level, providing them with comfort and support during some of their most vulnerable moments. This experience has prepared me to approach each patient with empathy, resilience, and a commitment to excellence. As I step into my nursing career, I am confident that the education, values, and skills I’ve gained will guide me in making a meaningful difference in the lives of those I care for.”

While in school, she balanced the rigorous demands of her studies with active participation in extracurricular activities. “Engaging in opportunities like study abroad, mentoring new students, and presenting research at a nursing conference with a group, not only enhanced my academic experience but also enriched my connection with the nursing community. These experiences will undoubtedly serve as a strong foundation for my future career, providing a rich blend of skills, memories, and relationships that will support and inspire me as I move forward in my nursing profession.”

The recognition as a student marshal reflects her hard work and enthusiasm and underscores the resilience and positive impact she has had, even when faced with challenges. Her approach demonstrates a profound understanding of the importance of a holistic experience in shaping a successful nursing career.

“My time at AUCON was enriched by both the friendships and the mentorship I’ve experienced. The bonds formed with classmates and the support from professors were invaluable, especially during those challenging moments. The memories of laughter, late-night studying, and shared experiences will indeed remain cherished parts of my journey,” Parker added.

Although she was raised in Austin, the Parker family moved to Auburn because Allison and her sister made plans to stay in Alabama after graduation. Parker plans to take her NCLEX to become a registered nurse, and work in the pediatric intensive care unit at Children’s of Alabama this fall.
