Assistant Clinical Professor Chris Martin successfully defended his dissertation to receive his doctoral degree from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Martin began his doctoral program in the summer of 2018, and his topic was on “investigating the experiences of baccalaureate nursing faculty regarding the transition to remote instruction due to COVID-19.”
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Auburn (2012), he began his career as a staff RN on the Coronary Care Unit at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. After a short stint working in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Chris completed his Master of Science in Nursing from Samford University (2015) with a focus in Healthcare Management and Leadership. Prior to joining the AUCON faculty, he served as the Director of Nursing Education and Staff Development at Grandview Medical Center where he oversaw all nursing education functions. Martin returned to Auburn in August 2019 to teach.
Besides teaching, he wears many hats at AUCON. He serves on the Inclusion/Diversity and Admission, Progression & Graduation (APG) committees. He also serves as the College of Nursing Representative to the Auburn University Senate and is one of the hosts of "Nurse Narrative" the Auburn College of Nursing Podcast and handles Twitter updates. He is a member of the American Association of Men in Nursing and SIGMA International.
Martin teaches 3210 Pharmacology, 3630 Nursing Leadership in Microsystems, 4920 Transitions to Professional Practice. According to Dr. Caralise Hunt, associate dean for academic affairs, Martin “brings energy and enthusiasm to the classroom and clinical settings. He is dedicated to implementing innovative teaching strategies, dedication to students and his ability to motivate them to produce their best work.”
His nursing philosophy is centered on the belief that learners are equal stakeholders in the learning process. “As an instructor my role is to engage learners and empower them to become active participants in the learning process. I believe the role of the student is to act as an effective contributor to the process of becoming a novice level nurse. I always tell my students that when they get done with my classes, I hope that they will have learned a lot about nursing and a little about life.”
For his dedication to teaching, he was selected by the entire Spring 2021 graduating class as an outstanding teacher.
Martin hopes to work on the scholarship of teaching and learning projects related to the development of nursing leadership skills.
Congratulations to Dr. Christopher Martin.
