Established in 1990 with funds provided by the Office of Vice President for Research, the Auburn University Research Instrumentation Facility (AURIF) is foremost a research instrumentation and service facility.  Its services are available to AU faculty, staff, and student researchers; other in-state and out-of-state institutions; and to businesses and private industry.

The facility is used extensively for research in the areas of biological sciences, engineering, geological sciences, polymer, fiber and material science, veterinarian medicine, pharmacal sciences, and nanotechology. Complete individual training, familiarization with instrumentation, and assistance with specimen preparation are available upon request.  Instrument use, training, and some technical services are provided on a fee-charge basis.

AURIF Mission:

  • Provide state-of-the-art research support, consultation and resources for studies involving the fine structure of cells and tissue, and other non-biological materials using light and other fluorescence-based microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and other imaging techniques.
  • Educate and train faculty, students, staff, and post-doctorate researchers in the theories and techniques of microscopy and image acquision.
  • Focus attention on the research mission and capabilities of the facility by highlighting activities through various tours and workshops to Alabama schools, university classes, extension groups, research institutions, industry, and  civic organizations.
  • Provide microscopy and imaging services to users within and outside the Auburn University system on a fee basis.

AURIF is located in room 037 of the Rouse Life Sciences Building.  Office and laboratory hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday but other schedules and after hours access may be arranged on an as needed basis ahead of time through the AURIF Director.
