Required Training


Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)

Auburn University has contracted with CITI at the University of Miami to provide web-based Human Subjects Research (HSR) Training in addition to training on other aspects of research.   

Training Requirement:  All IRB Members, Faculty Advisors and Key Personnel must complete CITI Training.  Required training will be determined based on Learner Groups as listed below in addition to the research being proposed.  Training must be completed every three years.  As part of the transition process, any training completed prior to August 1, 2011 will expire on August 1, 2014.  Individuals whose training has expired must complete training under the new CITI program by August 1, 2014 to remain in compliance. All new research protocols/determination requests and modifications to and renewals of existing projects will ONLY be approved if the research team, including faculty advisors, has completed CITI training in accordance with current AU requirements.


CITI Courses Provided by AU:  During CITI course enrollment you will select applicable training modules:

  • Human Subjects Research Training
    • Question 1: Learner Group
      • Health Sciences
        • IRB Member/Staff
        • AU Personnel (Faculty, Administration, Staff, and Students)
        • Non-AU Personnel
      • Social and Behavioral
        • IRB Member/Staff
        • AU Personnel (Faculty, Administration, Staff, and Students)
        • Non-AU Personnel
    • ​Question 2: Optional modules
      • ​Required as applicable to the proposed research.
  • Responsible Conduct of Research Training
    • Question 3: Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
      • RCR training is currently dependent on sponsor requirements.  See the AU RCR Website for more information.
      • If you do not wish to complete the RCR training, select “Not at this time. Thank you.”
  • US Export Control Regulations Training
    • Question 4: US Export Control (EC)
      • EC training is currently dependent on sponsor requirements and the Office of Research Security.  See the Export Control Website for more information.
      • If you do not wish to complete the EC training, select “Not at this time. Thank you.”
  • Conflicts of Interest Training
    • Question 5: Conflicts of Interest (COI)
      • COI training is currently dependent on sponsor requirements.  See the COI Website for more information.
      • If you do not wish to complete the COI training, select “Not at this time. Thank you.”​

To Complete Human Subjects Research CITI:

You must complete the course modules in order and pass the training with at least an 80% average score. Print the completion certificate and attach a copy for all key personnel to any protocol submission to the IRB. Investigators will be required to complete the CITI course every 3  years to maintain the certificate.
