Religion and spirituality are ways that some people choose to guide their lives by adhering to the deeper values that their religion or spiritual code dictates. Whether you formally practice a religion or simply develop a contemplative state of mind to consider the workings of the world, your connectedness to a reality that is larger than yourself is important to your overall health and well-being.

Religion and spirituality function differently in everyone’s life, so it is important to respect those who have a different belief system than you, or those that do not have a belief system. Here are a couple of reasons why people participate in religion and spirituality:

  • to be free of societal constraints,
  • to feel at peace and alone,
  • to feel connected to nature,
  • and to look ahead to the time beyond our earthly dwelling.
