Auburn University’s School of Nursing (AUSON) is conducting a pilot research study, Doggone Diabetes, to increase physical activity among people living with diabetes or prediabetes through a walking program implemented with animal-assisted therapy dogs. The Caring Foundation of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama has provided funds for the School to support the study, which is expected to continue for six months.

The study is being conducted by Drs. Caralise Hunt, Stuart Pope and Morgan Yordy. Participants of the study will join in routine, voluntary walking sessions around the Auburn University campus with Daisy, Miller, and CHOA, School of Nursing’s animal-assisted therapy dogs for six months.

Basic measurements of health including blood pressure, heart rate, weight, BMI, waist circumference, and hemoglobin A1C will be monitored to study the effects of this consistent exercise on those with type 1 and 2 diabetes.

Who can take part: Adults with type 1 or 2 diabetes

When: Voluntary walking times scheduled Monday through Friday, (three times each day)

Where: Walking paths across Auburn University's campus
